“The Jack” start bundle is named for my third child, my son, the one who made me a boy mom. Given that he is 12 and in middle school, he wasn’t sure how he felt having a set of flowers starts named for him, but he will have to deal. This one gets his name simply because ever since he was little, I would ask him what his favorite flower was, and his answer would always be “the blue one.” Given that there are a limited number of blue flowers, we are expanding this one a little to include some vivid purple plants as well. Please humor us here - my daughter wondered if the color combo was a nod toward the color of Jack’s skin, as he seems to be perpetually covered in blue and purple bruises after giving his all on the basketball court and baseball field. I have to be honest, that thought had already crossed my mind.
All that to say, this bundle is dynamic and brilliant(ly colored), and features blooms that will work hard and keep producing the more you cut them. And the cerinthe is one of the coolest greenery plants out there with it's blue and purple bells.
This 14-plant bundle includes:
-2 Cerinthe, “Pride of Gibraltar”
-2 Sweet Pea, “Just Jenny”
-2 Snapdragon, “Chantilly Purple”
-1 Bachelor Button, “Blue Boy”
-1 Verbena Bonariensis
-2 Sweet Pea, “Lunar Blue”
-2 Poppy, Peony Purple
-2 Nigella, “Persian Jewels Indigo”
Plant in full sun in early spring, after all danger of frost has passed. Plan for this bundle to fill a 3' x 3' garden bed. The sweet peas will need support like a teepee made from bamboo or sticks and should be planted 3-6 inches apart. I recommend planting the sweet pea teepee, verbena and bachelor button at the back of the bed and the remaining plants spaced 6-12 inches apart to fill out the front of the bed.
